Business, Not Grants, Key to Supporting Local SMEs

Software as a Service (SaaS) and consulting solutions provider Tactiv has a simple message for the Queensland Government: support STEM job creation and the growth of SMEs by becoming their clients and purchasing their products and services.

Tactiv Managing Director Simon Warner said “spending a grant is not doing business”.

“Doing business, whether it is with the government or private enterprise, requires building relationships and trust, uncovering customer needs, developing products and services to meet those needs, and then delivering the value that customers get out of using those products and services.

“You cannot beat doing the job,” he said. “You can’t ‘grant’ that.”

It’s a sentiment echoed by Queensland’s Chief Entrepreneur Mark Sowerby, who called on the Queensland Government to “give sales not subsidies” at the recent Myriad conference.

Brisbane-based Tactiv helps to make governments more effective with agile, cloud-based solutions that better respond to today’s business challenges and consumer demand.

Mr Warner said Tactiv provides an example of the Queensland Government’s support for the local technology sector, innovation and STEM jobs.

“We are currently delivering Project Portfolio Management, Relationship Management and Grantcycle Management solutions to the Queensland Government through the Department of Transport and Main Roads, Advance Queensland, National Parks Sport and Racing and the Department of Natural Resources.

“The Queensland Government have embraced digital transformation to improve services and engagement with citizens and businesses.

“We’ve positioned Tactiv to be a partner with governments in Australia, New Zealand and internationally to rapidly address their needs.”

The company has grown significantly over the past 18 months creating new STEM jobs and export revenue for Queensland. Revenue is currently projected to be up on 2016 by over 40%.

“We have more than doubled our staff to 36 to help with product development, project delivery and support,” Mr Warner said.

“This has necessitated a move in February 2017 to a new office at South Brisbane with over double the space we had at our previous West End premises.

“Tactiv is also exporting to New Zealand through a multi-million dollar contract with the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) to manage MFAT’s $600 million a year aid program via our Enquire solution.

“Our success with MFAT shows that given the chance Brisbane-based SMEs can be world leading and create STEM jobs at home.

“However we need the Queensland Government’s ongoing business to build the scale needed to remain competitive in interstate and international markets,” he said.

Tactiv’s Enquire solution currently manages over $18 billion worth of program funding across 25 commercial organisations and government departments throughout Australia and internationally.

Since Enquire’s release in 2005 Tactiv has made considerable investment in R&D to deliver a smarter product suite that allows clients to benefit from greater configurability, security and transparency.

“Our business experience within the grant, contract and project management sector, and the requirements and challenges our clients face, have influenced the underlying capabilities we are developing.

“Our mission is to make governments more effective, to help them deliver policy outcomes, greater accountability for taxpayer funds and better outcomes for citizens that interact with them.

“Tactiv is now focused on medium to large government departments in Australia and New Zealand as well as corporate and Not For Profit organisations in Australia,” Mr Warner said.
